THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In 1840 or so Anderson rode over the old brigade trail down the west side of the plateau to the North River. In 1842 a new trail was opened, and the old trail disappeared so quickly that no one remembered where it ran. #HBCBrigades #Journeys #HBCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-one/
FORT ST JAMES WAS THE CENTRE OF THE HBC BUSINESS in central British Columbia #BC, and this is where the HBC Brigades began their one thousand mile journey south to Fort #Vancouver every year. But it is interesting to note that both the Brigades, and the fort itself, began their life under the old North West Company. #AmWriting #History #HBCBrigades https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-st-james-2/

Here is a short Chronology of the fur Trade west of the Rocky Mountains. Of course I would add much more to this list now, but for the moment, the important stuff is here. #History #HBCBrigades #HistoricJourney #AmWritingHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/chronology-fur-trade/
A short Chronology of the Fur Trade West of the Rockies

The fur trade in B.C. began with Alexander McKenzie's search for the Pacific route. 65 years later the fur trade was interrupted by the Fraser R. gold rush.

The "harangue" was very much a part of the fur trade: part of the First Nations' culture adopted by the HBC men. Everyone harangued the First Nations, and the First Nations then harangued them back! #CanadaHistory #WAHistory #BCHistory #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/harangue/
HBC BRIGADES JOURNAL, 1826:
"The excessive heat experienced these two Days has tended much to spoil our fresh Fish, part of which it was necessary to throw away, and a bare sufficiency remains for tomorrows consumption.
"Wednesday. A fine aft breeze throughout the day assisted our progress very considerably. Several bands of Indians were seen Encamped by the River, who appear destitute of every species of food excepting Roots, which this Country furnishes... #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades #Books

"The latter part of the day was rainy, which being accompanied by a strong head wind impeded our progress much.
"Friday. Early in the mroning the Men began to put the two Boats we take here in order, which was not effected until 11 o'clock, when the ladings were given out & we immediately after pursued our voyage to Fort #Vancouver #WA. HBC BRIGADES JOURNAL, 1826:
"Pursued our route at the usual hour, and stopped at Lac du Rocher (which is also covered with Ice), to rest the Horses. In the afternoon we resumed our March and reached the foot of the Mountain at 5 o'clock pm, when we encamped. the road we passed through this day is very rugged and many obstructions occasioned by fallen woods occur. For an hour before encamping, and for some time after, it snowed considerably. The old Chief... #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades #Books
THE HBC BRIGADES JOURNAL, 1826:
"We discovered that two of the horses were missing, and there being no doubt but that they had been stolen, Mr. James Douglas and three Men set out immediately in pursuit of the Thieves, and in the meantime several Indians who followed us since yesterday were put under arrest, as I was determined in the event of Mr. Douglas's being unsuccessful in uncovering our Horses, to replace one of them with the only Horse these people have. #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades
THE HBC BRIGADES JOURNAL, 1826:
"At half after two am we left our Encampment and passed the Forks formed by the Junction of the two Rivers which flow from Stuart's & Fraser's Lakes at a quarter past twelve, and Encamped below the rapids of Chal-a-oo-chicks at half an hour after 7. The weather was fine.
"Sunday. Proceeded at the same time as yesterday, and shortly after passed the Forks formed by the union of the East or main branch of Fraser's River, with that.... #HistoricJourney #HBCBrigades
THE HBC BRIGADES, BLOGPOST:
Old inactive volcanoes are very much a part of the Okanagan Valley, and the men of the HBC Brigades must have had some difficulty with some parts of the rugged landscape. They finally settled on a good route which they used for years and years, but the early routes were deep in mud holes that were almost impossible to cross. #HBCBrigades #Brigades #HistoricJourney #AmWritingHistory #Books http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/volcanoes/
Volcanoes

Volcanoes are very much a part of the brigade trail that runs through the Okanagan valley -- but there are volcanoes elsewhere, as well.
