…As a result of choices made by legislators 35yrs ago, the effort to find a #citizen is not expected at the front end, when employers are considering #hiring #workers from abroad. At that point, employers simply enter the lottery for #H1Bs, & if they get one, they can use it.

Only once a company has employed someone for 5 or 6 yrs & become *committed* to *helping* that person stay in the US permanently must the company show that it is trying to find someone else.

Looks like #Trump uses #H1Bs on his properties and so has now joined the fight on the side of #Musk, even though he has criticized the program in the past. My bet is this shuts up almost everyone. Just like they all hate the vax he both pushed out and is still very proud of, what's more important is always what their cult leader says. I hope to be proven wrong. #MAGA

The clash in Trump-world over #H1Bs exposes a real ideological contradiction in MAGA but I doubt it poses a real politician problem. You can reward tech oligarchs with loosened immigration rules without stirring up the nazis as long as ICE is out terrorizing Latino immigrants, and the opposition will rightfully make so much noise over the latter that the former can be done quietly.

Elon Musk has made it abundantly clear that he wants people to work for little to no money, sleep in the workplace that he’s provided them, subsist on the food that he also provides, work 20 hours a day. And his workforce is comprised of H1B indentured workers - I was one at one point. No wonder that Musk wants to boost immigration that way. That’s how he keeps his mine running. Shame. Shame. All these headlines saying #H1Bs have 60 days finding a new job are just glossing over the problem.
The 60-day rule applies to the entire H1-B span and doesn’t reset when you switch to a new employer. For this reason, most H1-B workers never dare to take a long break and always land on a solid offer from a new employer before even giving notice.
It’s an incredibly cruel #immigration system.

I didn’t experience this per se but in general this essay matches my experience when I was on H1-B. Unfortunately making H1-Bs’ lives easier doesn’t have much political gain so even the democrats don’t really give a shit.

It’s an extremely stressful time for the #H1Bs with all these tech layoffs. The inaction from the federal government is an invitation for the bad players to abuse their employees.
