Houston METRO receives $1.2 million in federal funding for Gulfton corridor project

Gulfton residents are more than five times as likely to use public transit than the average Houstonian, according to the Harris County commissioner that represents the neighborhood.

Two dozen local organizations signed and sent a letter to Houston Mayor John Whitmire this morning asking him to apologize for comments he made about Gulfton residents which they consider “deeply offensive.”

Whitmire last month said to a news outlet that Houstonians in Gulfton are “largely undocumented immigrants. They just want basic services. They don’t want to be part of the Galleria. You think they’re going to be welcome in the Galleria?”

Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard confronted Mayor John Whitmire at this week’s city council meeting for a comment he made about Gulton residents earlier this week, saying he was “disheartened” by it.
