A year ago, Pridelord released. Full of mystery and intrigue, strange monsters and adorable ottergryphs, it was also the first in the series to offer a main cast transfemme gryphon. And Paysan has done a great job of reviewing it without more than very vague spoilers.

If you love gryphons, epic fantasy, creature protagonists, naturepunk, or adorable antihero+cottage core lesbian couples, check it out today!

Finally done, only... 11 days late for #pridemonth >.=.<

I don't typically do fan art,
(or color, or sfw...) but I've done it this time. Anyway, on to the description.

It's Lei from
@kvalenagle's Gryphon Insurrection series, which I highly recommend reading if you haven't already.

It's always fun when a new group of readers start the series and are going through and talking about it at around the same rate =] Seems like for this batch, Stripes and her motmot bodyguards are the most popular.

Did you know patrons got a special variant cover of The Crackling Sea where Grenkin has his iconic eye patch?

It's true! And the ebook version with the eye patch is still available at the ebook and up levels at https://patreon.com/kvalenagle

As a bonus, you help out a trans author during Pride =)

Fan Art

I’ve been honored to receive so much fan art over the years, but with social media being fractured, there hasn’t been a good place to put it all. With that in mind, I’m slowly exp…

Here's a fun typo that's specific to creature fantasy authors. If you pluralize opinicus as opinici instead of opinicuses, do a search for "opinici" in your manuscript and see how often you accidentally used that form as an adjective. It should be "opinicus lovers" and not "opinici lovers."

I've edited maybe twelve gryphon-adjacent creature fantasy books at this point, sometimes just doing a proofread as a favor, and the moment I see an opinicus show up, I perform that search and I always catch something.

Funnily enough, I'm not sure where using opinici as an irregular plural began. During the early days of the pandemic, I replayed some old 90s video games for fun, and I was surprised to see the irregular plural even back then in lines like "Feral opinici and masterless golems roam the highlands. They would make a valuable addition to our army" in Ogre Battle: Person of Lordly Caliber.

And if anyone doesn't know what an opinicus is, it's a different type of gryphon. The heraldry definition is any gryphon who lacks external ears, but it can also mean a male gryphon (in heraldry, that sometimes means without wings, or with light spikes for wings). Really, though, in modern fantasy, opinicus is the most common term for when you have two species of gryphons in the same fantasy setting.

In GryphIns, the series leans into the lack of external ears and makes opinici more-avian gryphons. In Feathers & Flames, it's the opposite: the opinici are fully feline gryphons and even have kitty ears.

It's a popular secondary gryphon species term for a reason: the other gryphon 'cousins' all have goofy names like keythongs or alces!

Anyways, if you're writing opinicus books, which you should, do a quick search for opinici and see if you accidentally used it as an adjective somewhere. Most likely, you did! And if not, you're a better writer than I am =]

Belamuria is a continent where most of the terrestrial mammals have gone extinct, but recently, squirrels and capybaras have been reintroduced through shipwrecks. They've taken over the jungle and swamp, much to the chagrin of the local gryphon populations

I've been on a bit of a reading rampage lately, and I couldn't resist trying to bring some of these characters to life!
