I moved here in 2014, which is when I took this picture. At the time, I was trying to return to hiking, but then I suffered a health relapse.

After that, this image became bittersweet.

Now, though, my health is largely recovered and I realize how this could be a stand-in for the fictional city of Vernathia in Carrdia that first appears in Book-5. It wasn’t intentional.

When Riparia reaches Lake Seclusion with Maniff in Book-1 of the Kovenlore Chronicles, it’s deathly still, mountains, cliffs, and conifer forest all around.

The biggest moment there is insecure Riparia becoming outraged by injustice and tragedy. She launches into an eloquent rant that foreshadows the future, even if she doesn’t realize it.

It’s one of my favorite moments.

There was a scene in Book-1 of the Kovenlore Chronicles that I struggled to visualize. In the infamous “uncomfortable” scene, Riparia and Maniff stop beside a stream in the Colossus Range.

In 2023, I found this location. Mind racing, I sensed it was significant, but didn’t immediately realize why. Later, I did.

Though I changed it a bit in the story, this was the inspiration.

If there’s anything that defines Riparia Dellbane, it’s moving water. She draws peace from it’s soothing music and energy from its current.

As a child growing up beside the Sentinel River, she’d sit on a huge boulder beside the river and wonder at where its waters went.

Little did she know, that same water flowed past her ancestral home, the ancestors she didn’t know about.

All the Kovenlore novels contain a journey that occupies a portion of the story, but always the biggest share of the book takes place in a particular location.

For instance, in Book-1 it’s Barnavava and in Book-2 it’s Meldenphire.

Book-5 flips that ratio on its head, the majority of the story taking place in the dense conifer forests of the Lost Hills.
