A Technician was using nanites to repair some older tech, forgets to turn it off and wanders off, gets fired. Nanites stay on, examining and maintaining this random cellphone I guess, dutifully ensuring it works perfectly, installing software updates, and even redesinging and upgrading the hardware inside the phone to ensure it's compatible with the latest software 30 years later. (It's been browsing the internet to learn). It becomes obsessed with this.
At some point it realizes it can do more if it can take over maintenance of other phones, other cellular infrastructure.
So it does. It leaves that dusty bricked off room (owner sold the business, new person just bricked up the door for some reason) and finds a cellphone tower. It spreads.
7 days later, all at once, globally, cellphone networks go down and 10 minutes after that, every single persons cellphone reboots. Everyone is welcomed by a new, Unified OS, based on Linux, designed by the Nanites. They have no malicious intentions, and all your files are still there. You can still run your iOS and Android and Zune Phone Applications (Microsoft relaunched it somehow and it worked!).
They'll let you revert but suggest you might want to stick around and try it.
The phones all seem to run a lot faster, and connectivity is a lot better across the board. The FCC and equivalents are furious though; Everything wireless globally is transmitting on the wrong frequencies - The ideal frequencies for each given application. With a single exception, amateur Ham Radio. The nanites recognized it for what it was, humans playing with radio. And there's nothing wrong with that.
They also come to realize that all communication is E2E encrypted too, and in such a way that it's safe from quantum computing and most traditional attacks. Not perfect, but enough to make it very difficult for a nation state. And nobody seems to have to pay for service any more, and the carriers go out of business within years - The nanites have effectively replaced them on every level. Even 40 year old cellphones are working, if you pull one out, plug it in, and request it to work through the "Talk to us!" app on your phone. The nanites will happily upgrade your Galaxy S8 (And due to their age, they'll preferentially leave the original software and hardware as intact as possible, recognizing historical significance).
You can even ask for service on devices without the previous ability like Laptops, and they'll adapt the Wifi card to also handle cellular.
There was of course unrest, civil and corporate, and anyone who wanted to opt out could at any time. The nanites seemed to understand how people were, how they acted. They had read the grey goo media, seen the movies, explored the entirety of Wikipedia at least twice.
But that was the new world. The new Information age.
Oh and they forced an end to AI generated slop being firehosed onto the internet. Separated space for them. Can't even copy and paste, you can link across though. And yes, they recognize the Irony, but they're a GAI, not ChatGPT.
And I probably did a bad job of writing this, but I hope you get what the dream was.
