The cause of rail advocacy in the Northwest has been significantly bolstered by last night's Senate confirmation of Elaine Clegg of Boise to a seat on the Amtrak Board. We believe that she and the three others confirmed will make Amtrak more responsive beyond the Norteast Corridor. AAWA looks forward to continuing our work with her. Congratulations, Elaine! #Amtrak #GreaterNW

"The restoration effort for Port Angeles’ Rayonier Logging Locomotive #4…located at Lauridsen Boulevard at the corner of Chase Street, was donated to the city of Port Angeles in 1960. It was built in 1924 by Willamette Iron & Steel Works in Portland, Ore., and is one of only six Willamette locomotives left in the world. "A name is often more than just a name. For Indigenous people, the meanings behind names run much deeper than they appear on paper. There’s a connection between the name and the land itself that becomes almost indistinguishable…To erase a name off the map is a form of cultural and historical desecration. To superimpose a new one that has no meaningful affiliation with the land itself leaves a different kind of sting.” https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-captain-george-vancouver-mapped-and-shaped-the-modern-pacific-northwest-180985233/ #GreaterNW #History

Don’t Forget About Non-Drivers in Rural America — Streetsblog USA

"Too often, advocates for reducing car-dependency focus solely on dense urban areas. But in doing so, they write off too much of our country and discount the reality of too many non-drivers."
