As I was heading to my car after a long day of photography, the sky became suddenly colorful. The sun had already set and I figured the day was done, but once I saw the incredible pinks and blues, I set up my camera again as fast as I could.

Retreating wildfire smoke sets off a stunning Sunset at Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Sometimes you haul miles and plan extensively for a specific shot. And other times, like this one, you're putting your camera back in your car when you suddenly realize that you need to scrambled to take it back out and capture a stunning moment you weren't expecting.

"Galactic Core"

This was my very first attempt at astrophotography, and it almost didn't happen! I had spent weeks learning how to get my camera set up properly, and researching the best tripod to bring backpacking. I chose Great Sand Dunes National Park as my destination of choice as I had been there once before and experience how truly dark it was, and backpacking on the dunes is one of the most gratifying experiences.

Once we backpacked out into the dune field and got our camp set up and ate dinner, the clouds rolled in at once after being clear skies all day. I was disheartened, but stuck to my plan anyway. I crawled into my tent around 10 PM and read and napped, then wormed my way back out around 1 AM was met with slightly less cloudy skies. By the time I made my way to the top of nearby dune and got my camera set up, the clouds had completely cleared out!

I had the pleasure over the weekend of backpacking into #greatsanddunesnationalpark with the Scout troop. I've been to a lot of places and done a lot of things in all my years, but that... was pretty profound!
