Another disconnect! 😐 (Between faculty & students) but good to hear your thoughts about “students [being] largely on to the con”. 🙏🏻

Ewww. Slop-code in 1Password. #grandtheftautocomplete
Another colleague asked me for my views.
He basically agreed with me, but worries he'll be left behind if he doesn't use it (even though he agrees that even if it produces working code, it will be garbage in structure and unmaintainable, and maintenance is by far most of what we actually do in software engineering, not developing new code).
I commented that I'm actually an extremely stubborn person. I've got hard moral lines that I will not cross, consequences be damned. I'm like this about lots of aspects of my life. Looking back, I've got really, really practiced at boycotting things I consider unethical to the point where it's second nature.
So, I explained, *even if the fucking thing turns out to be necessary, I'm still not going to use it!*. He liked that, and said to stay strong.
It might be wishful thinking, (it's probably wishful thinking) but I do believe that sooner or later the consequences of the shit code will come back to bite us, and we'll turf the whole endeavour. Hopefully sooner.
Our problem isn't that we need to produce more shitty code faster, we need to produce better code. And the thing fundamentally cannot do that, because it's just a statistical autocomplete for what symbols look like they should go in the right place; it can't actually reason the logic of a problem.
The hell with it.
@futurebird
I still like ‘Grand Theft AutoComplete” as description - sorry I can’t remember who I first read saying it.
@munin
Yes yes yes!!! 🙏🏻 I wish I could boost boost boost this multiple times!: “… "asking" the LLM to explain "why" "it" did a thing is thrice-divorced from reality:
“It cannot have a why;
It cannot have a self to have motivations;
And the LLM you ask is not the one that did it, but is a new instance reading from its predecessors notes.
“Treating it as tho it is an entity with continuity of existence is fucking delusional and I am fucking sick of pandering to this horseshit.
Touch some grass and get a fucking therapist.”
What were the motivations of the PERSONS involved in this stupidity and why do so many PEOPLE prefer to argue about the LLM rather than examine the stupidity? (Crudely stated but I hope clear)
@petealexharris
Yes!! Such a nice summary of the LLM problem/ issue/ challenge/ deficit/ actuality: “Words about words aren't words about things.” 🙏🏻

Not surprised that Gen-z hates #GrandTheftAutocomplete, but that it is viewed less favourably than ICE is quite the stat.
For the record, I’m from the Oregon Trail generation and I effing despise it.
@paul
A great way of showing the harm & potential harm of Grand Theft AutoComplete. 🙀
Thanks for sharing this!! 🙏🏻
