I wrote up some thoughts about the recent Grace Hopper conference debacle. Would appreciate a share or some feedback if this post resonates with you!

We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Programming to Bring You This Important Message

Content warning: profanity, sexism Also — sorry for skipping a post last week, I had this one ready to go and then pulled it at the last minute to get some more feedback. We’ll be back on our regularly scheduled content this week. Ok, so I had a plan for what I was going to write about this week (no, I actually wasn’t going to rant about Python, fun as that might’ve been), but some stuff came across my feed that changed up my plan.

So regarding the #GraceHopper23 debacle (ref: https://www.wired.com/story/grace-hopper-celebration-career-fair-men/), I am wondering:
* if there was an organized push beforehand by #TechBros to brigade the event;
* if this was facilitated by the fact that the event took place in #Florida where there is a high concentration of, well, #FloridaMan; and
* what the organizers were thinking holding a #conference aimed at #women in a state which is unsafe for women.
Men Overran a Job Fair for Women in Tech

The Grace Hopper Celebration is meant to unite women in tech. This year droves of men came looking for jobs.

I am a retired software engineer—35 years and a UCBerkeley CS grad. I participated in the first couple of grace hopper conferences, including organizing the lesbian group.

The behavior of the men, described by the posters, is inexcusable and absolutely in line with the at-work behavior of *some* men, and is sometimes egged on by the management hierarchy. This is my experience.

I am not surprised at men acting badly at this year’s GH conference. Sadly, I wish I was.

Given the governor of Florida's hostile nature toward Americans who are Black, LGBTQIA+, & those who can give birth, I sincerely hope that #AnitaBorg would consider hosting #GraceHopper23 in another state.
FL isn't safe & #GHC is too important an event for these communities.
