Eric the half-a-beeIt would’ve been my father‘s 100th birthday today. He was deaf towards the end of his life (89) due to the ear damage caused by the heavy blast from the 15 inch guns.
Here is a #watercolour. I did about 10 years ago, partially cheated by importing a photograph of #HMSMalaya, an Elizabeth class #battleship that saw service in both the first and second world wars and making changes to bring it up to how it was during #WW2, such as removal of all th 8” barrage guns.. My #father is visible as a tiny figure a couple of pixels long, clinging to the starboard strut from the rear mast. One of his jobs was to repair radio wiring which had become damaged during shelling. His battle station was in the “spotting top”, visible as a small hut on the rear mast. He was a #signaller and he volunteered for the job because he would rather be there than down sealed in the radio room above the #keel where all the #codes were kept.
All #OurParents in the services did some amazing things during the Second World War; may #GodBless them all.
