Let us end our autumn stroll down The Path of the Philosophy at a temple that needs no introduction...

...Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺).

10) ASHIKAGA MEMORIAL😇

At the base of Daimonji-yama (大文字山) stands Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺/慈照寺), founded by Ashikaga Yoshimasa (足利義政 1436-90).

Some believe Yoshimasa began Daimonji in order to commemorate the death of his son Yoshihisa (足利義尚 - 9th Shogun) in 1489.

From noon on August 15th until noon the next day people gather at Jōdo-in (浄土院), beside Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺), to write down their prayers on 'gomaki' (護摩木 wooden prayer tablets).

These are then bundled together and carried up the mountain to be used within the bonfires.

By the end of the Ōnin War (1467-77) only 1 of the Tōji-ji temples survived...Kitatōji-ji It is this temple that we now know as Tōji-in.

The Ashikaga shōgunate was both a blessing and curse for Kyōto. The clan's patronage aided in an extraordinary blossoming of culture, but their weakening grip on power resulted in a 10 year civil war that completely destroyed the capital and led to the "Warring States period".
