#Regeneration of fins and limbs relies on shared cellular playbook
Immune cells, blood and repair #genes act in concert across three regenerating #vertebrates
Team cut fins off #bichirs and tracked #gene activity at wound after one, three and seven days, which revealed types of cells present and activity. Team compared data to similar new and existing data about #axolotl, salamander that regrows limbs, and #zebrafish, a that can regrow tips of fins

The findings strengthen the case that regeneration is an old trait, offering insights into how complex tissues rebuild themselves.

Some #snakes lack the ‘#hunger #hormone.’ Experts are hungry to know why
The #gene for #ghrelin is missing in serpents, yet present in other fasting #reptiles
Evolutionary #geneticist Rui Pinto and colleagues stumbled on the discovery when comparing the #genomes of 112 reptile species, including snakes, crocodiles and chameleons, which they obtained from public database. Genes for ghrelin and its activating enzyme were absent in 32 snake species.

Some snakes lack the ‘hunger hormone.’ Experts are hungry to know why

The complex biology of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, has researchers wondering how its absence helps snakes last a long time with no food, if at all.

Researchers develop new way to safely insert gene-sized DNA into the genome

Genome editing-based therapies typically aim to treat disease by correcting underlying genetic mutations in patient’s cells. However, most genetic disorders are caused by dozens or even thousands of unique mutations spread across a gene; this diversity results in challenges of scale when it comes to developing customized therapies for many individuals. A more universal strategy could involve the precise insertion of an entire copy of a healthy gene into a specific location in the genome, which could, in principle, provide a single, widely applicable treatment for all patients irrespective of their mutation within that gene.   Taking a step towards developing genetic therapies at scale, researchers from Mass General Brigham and colleagues describe a novel, non-toxic approach for inserting gene-sized DNA in a study published in Nature.
