I added more locations to my zoomable Terra Galactica fantasy map including a few more nebulae and all the Messier open star clusters.

Gaia DR3 zoomable fantasy map

The twelfth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series includes many interesting locations of the inner galaxy in the first quadrant including objects in the direction of Sagittarius, Serpens and Scutum. We'll also look at the debate on spiral structure in this region.

The eleventh detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is the third quadrant in the outer galaxy, including the large but sparsely populated Puppis Peninsula.

The tenth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is the inner galaxy as a whole. I'll look at some structures that *seem* to appear there and why Gaia astronomers are reluctant to draw any conclusions, at least right now.

The ninth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is the Kingdom of Scorpius, which lies in the nearby inner galaxy.

The eighth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is the Territory of Pişmiş, which lies roughly in the direction of the constellation Circinus in the distant inner galaxy.

This month I created a version of my Gaia DR3 hot star density map using a Tolkienesque fantasy theme, with star density mapped as forest, dust as mountains and hills, and prominent HII regions and open clusters as towns, cities and other structures.

Here is a link to a zoomable version: https://gruze.org/dr3_fantasy/

The seventh detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is the Isle of Cassiopeia. This vast island lies off the main coast of Terra Galactica like the Madagascar of the Milky Way. It includes some of the most populous and luminous star clusters within 4000 parsecs.

The sixth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is Cygnus X. This mysterious massive star formation region was first detected in radio in the 1950s. Most of its clusters can be viewed dimly through dense dust clouds and the famous black hole binary system, Cyg X-1, also in this direction, can be detected in X-rays.

But it takes the help of infrared and x-ray telescopes to study the most amazing object in this region, Cyg OB2.

The fifth detail map of my #GaiaMissionFantasyMap series is Lake California. This is an example of a density structure: a ring of hot stars and dust that surrounds an empty void and may be the most extreme and interesting density structure in Gaia DR3. #Astronomy #Fantasy #Cartography
