It's always inexpressibly harsh trying to deal with the loss of a beloved family member. I have pet rats who only live 3-4 years, but it's still like a gut punch every time one of them dies. Remember the good times. The joy they brought you. In my household we have a tradition where we like to celebrate and remember each lost loved one on their birthday each year, which really helps as the feelings of love they brought us when alive never really goes away. If that's a bit much, you can always do it once for all your lost ones, once a year. I recommend Dia De Los Muertos (the Mexican Day of the Dead), but you do you.

Take care.

The joy they brought you can live in your memories forever. ❤️

It would probably help me a lot and give me relief, but I seem to have this situation and have to accept it for what it is right now. Today, I rode my spin bike lightly while watching season one, episode 4 of House of the Dragon with my daughter. I haven't been […]

What We Write About When We Write About Grief, Part Two

Where joy most revels, grief doth most lament.
Grief joys, joy grieves, on slender accident.
—William Shakespeare, Hamlet
In last month’s post (“ What We Write About When We Write About Grief ”), I provided examples of authors depicting grief in three different genres: fiction, poetry, and memoir.
Most of the comments responding to the post focused on how credible or authentic (or not) the various excerpts were in describing what it felt like to grieve.
