Winter plumbing problems often begin with a single frozen pipe hidden behind a wall, in a crawl space, or in a garage.

I’ve put together a practical homeowner's guide covering:
• Pipe insulation
• Heat tape
• Outdoor hose prep
• Dripping faucet tips
• Freeze warning signs

Finally had a pipe freeze. We have an unfinished basement that usually stays above 40℉, plus I monitor it, so I wasn't concerned. However, it looks like there are localized areas of the basement that get colder than the spot I'm monitoring, and last night it got down to -10℉ outside. Apparently that was enough. The problem was localized to one spot right at the pressure tank, and hitting it with a space heater for 10 minutes was enough to clear it. Nothing's damaged as far as I can see. Got lucky.

I guess I'll be doing some insulating. This is the longest, coldest cold snap I've experienced here and the bright side of it is that it's alerted me to a trouble spot as well as the limits of our current systems!

Broken water mains, flooding, frozen pipes, and a boil water advisory

It's been a busy week in Dawson, most particularly for our city workers, and local contractors. We've had a couple of water main breaks lately, which happens here in winter, especially as it starts to warm up. (We're up to the minus twenties today!!) One of the water main breaks closed the school for a couple of days last week when the water had to be turned off. But on Thursday afternoon, it was deep in the minus 30's, and the water main broke in front of the pit, flooding the historical, […]

The never ending cold…

We were below -40 for some part of 19 straight days. That’s a decent streak! But yesterday we tiptoed into the minus twenties. Oh so warm! We spent the weekend soaking up window sill puddles from the ice melting off the edges of the windows. The week of Christmas was declared too cold for mail deliveries, hardware store deliveries, or even the grocery truck. Our electrical grid was maxed. Even the RCMP limited their services. Here are some screenshots I took during the cold […]

🔧 Maintenance Monday: Prevent Frozen Pipes

As we head into colder nights, take a few minutes to:
• Insulate exposed pipes in basements/garages
• Let faucets on exterior walls drip on the coldest nights
• Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can reach the pipes
• Make sure you know where the main water shut-off valve is

Small steps, big protection for your home this winter in CNY.

To drip or not to drip: Houston-area officials offer conflicting guidance on faucets during a freeze

The City of Houston is asking residents not to leave their faucets dripping during the freeze because it could cause the city's water system to lose pressure. Harris County officials, meanwhile, say those outside the city should let them drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
