During the first half of 2025, I barely made any progress in learning web development. My goals for the remainder of the year are to get back into the game and move closer to being job ready.
I’m learning full-stack #JavaScript with #TheOdinProject as my main learning resource. #FrontendMentor is a vital part of my learning stack for additional coding practice, community feedback, and web accessibility best practices.
Today I started the lesson on creating an effective portfolio on the Getting Job Ready learning path by Frontend Mentor.
Not that I'll be job ready any time soon, but there are some steps that I like to start early, while I'm still working on building my technical skills.
I already have a personal website that's built on a blogging template. I could turn it into a portfolio site, or I could start from scratch with a different template.
The #FrontendMentor challenge I’m working on uses a variable font with a Softness axis and a Wonky axis. Sadly, I won’t be using them in my project, and I like the sharp font with no WONK better anyway. I do appreciate the Optical Size axis. It‘s applied automatically if available.
The design uses the font family in only one font size and one font weight. So I‘ll probably choose the static font file because it’s much smaller: 73KB compared to 358KB for TTF. BORING!
So far, my approach for the projects in #TheOdinProject was to stick to the assignment, follow the design, and only use what had been covered in the curriculum.
But coding a sign-up form that only works on desktop and at the same time taking a deep dive into responsive layouts to prepare for the “Building responsive layouts” learning path on #FrontendMentor is very weird.
The Full Stack JavaScript path by The Odin Project covers responsive design as the last front-end topic before React.
After working on four challenges for #FrontendMentor, it’s difficult for me to go back to working on projects for #TheOdinProject.
The Frontend Mentor challenges had simple, yet professional designs and high expectations regarding accessibility and responsiveness.
The projects for The Odin Project have designs that don’t look like they were made by a professional designer and come with the instruction not to worry about responsive layouts.
Those are two very different sets of constraints!
I completed my fourth front-end coding challenge from Frontend Mentor: a recipe page with custom list markers! 🎉
It's a bit more sophisticated than the recipe site I did very early in the Foundations Course for The Odin Project, and also a lot more responsive and accessible.
