Free DNS (https://freedns.afraid.org/) seems to be having certificate issues and many of their certificates on their various domains (like on strangled.net) are expired. Given their size it's weird that I'm apparently the only one affected based on non-existent noise on the socials. The issue shows up with external testing tools, too. #FreeDNS

I think this this is enough reason for me to try a new domain name for a change. I don't own one anyway - simply got one for free from #FreeDNS. I should choose one that still has a good reputation - it's not the first time I've seen it reported for malware.

Somehow, my plan of making my own #DynDNS by regularly updating my #netcup domain with my home IP doesn't really work, it's super unreliable. I guess this DNS caching really is a b*tch. 😩

I wonder what #FreeDNS et al. do differently. Maybe they have some mechanics to force everyone to update more quickly, idk...

Btw if you wanna use it too you can, but you have to be on #Yggdrasil for now. I would've setup a clearnet domain, but the #FreeDNS at afraid.org for some reason says my VPS IP is in a blacklist and won't let me setup an A record. So I'm waiting for the DNS admin there to exempt me.

@nixCraft $110 or so to #Hetzner of 2x physical boxes + 1x storage box, $35 or so to #Linode for a few VPS machines, I use #FreeDNS over at #1984.is to host my domains, then there might be small subscriptions here and there to test things like #CoPilot, #ChatGPT and other such things from time to time but not constantly

Got an email today from the company in Iceland that bought x.is - which was a #VPS hosting service, #FreeDNS and more - telling me that those services were being turned off this year.
Why do I have a sneeky suspicion that that domain will now end up in the hands of a certain billionaire?
