As such, the database of #Form4473 transactions is incomplete, and not necessarily useful. Of course 'Ghost' guns don't even appear on it, and there is no requirement to "register" guns you currently own with the authorities.

So, for all practical purposes, there isn't much of a list. (4/fin)

Nothing *updates* the #Form4473 so if you move, they don't generally know where you live *now*. And if you sell your gun in a person to person transaction you aren't required (and actually cannot because you aren't an FFL) to file a #Form4473. That 'breaks the chain' if you will of where the gun is now. If it was stolen, you MUST have a police report reporting it stolen for them to stop bothering you. (3/n)

@kkarhan

When a gun is used in a crime, the serial number gets traced, which leads to the #Form4473 which leads to the last person who bought it at an FFL mediated transaction. Law enforcement will interview the owner to see if they are the perpetrator and if not, how their gun got involved in the crime. My Dad has a number of discussions with the FBI and police over the years as they tried to track down a gun owner. (2/n)

Multi-parter for the #Form4473 folks. (this is 1/n)

My Dad held a Class 3 Federal Firearms License (FFL) for 40 years. He was a staple at Gun shows and often provided the FFL of record for gun sales transactions. The serial number and transaction details are recorded in a database at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF).

@tokensane @kbsez

@tokensane @kbsez @ChuckMcManis I sincerely doubt that they don't automate the processing of #Form4473 filings the same way the #NICS is automated.

  • Obviously most states allow unrecorded cash transactions at gun shows, tho criminals have already existing pipelines with stolen and black-market production guns...

@kbsez Anyone who believes there isn't a #GunRegistry in the #USA has never filed a #Form4473!

@PeasLuvnJustice Lying on #Form4473 is felony (a federal crime) and can get people up to 15 years of jail per count.

  • Double that if they successfully acquired a gun due to the fraudulent form fillout.

OFC this counts per gun and fillout!

@Networknees99 yeah, if there's one thing noone should do is lie on the #Form4473 because that is a felony!

@kingu Actually, he also needs na ID for the rest as per #NFA, alongside with a filled-out #Form4473...

Also every cashuer that accepts a gun - even lying down - pointed at them - is kinda suicidal...
