So with all this talk about tariffs and balance of trade, I thought I'd take a look at how much food Australia imports from the US.

I found this site and it has a cool visualisation based on 2017 DFAT data: https://esriaustralia.com.au/blog/australias-food-imports-world-map-where-our-food

Pre-COVID but definitely post Australia–United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) where we saw things like cheap US processed pork products flood into Australia, things like hams and those pre-made ribs that pubs started selling.

Anyway, in 2017 Australia imported almost $25.5B AUD in food from the US.

About $20B was processed and the 3 biggest categories were:
1. Processed meat & meat preparations - $2,2B
2. Vegetables, fruits & nuts - $2.3B
3. Sugars, honey, coffee, cocoas & confectionery - $1.3B

WIth unprocessed foods, most of the US imports were in the vegetables, fruit & nuts category at a bit over $3.1B.

With President Trump's policies such as tariffs Canadian potash and deportation of immigrants working in the agriculture industry, it wouldn't be surprising if both output was down and prices are up.

It's probably a great time for Australian shoppers to consider how much American food products are worth to them, especially with rising costs due to a weaker exchange rate and higher costs.

Australia's food imports world map: where our food is from

Australia is blessed with a natural environment and climate conducive to growing and producing a great range of high quality food, from fruit, nuts and vegetables to dairy, to seafood and livestock. Yet, to maintain consistent supply and satisfy year-round demand, Australia also needs to import a wide variety of food products into the country every year.
