Weird. There's loads of stuff online about how foam swords are called "boffers", but nothing that I can see, even on the Wikipedia page, for why they're called that.

And yet, I remember my brother and I having #Boffer branded swords which were sculpted white foam with embedded plastic handles, way back around 1980, give or take a year or two. I can find no reference to the brand online though.
