Also via #Flyvbjerg on twitter, this paper on why nuclear construction is so expensive. One thing not noted in the paper is that many expensive on-the-fly changes were due to nuclear regulators/engineering dismissing issues raised by nuclear critics. For example, common mode failures were identified by UCS early, but NRC/industry refused to think about them until e.g. after Fukushima.

Very applicable to IT projects.
#Flyvbjerg and #DGardner's book on projects has a lot of insight about why #ComputerSystems and #IT projects fail so often ,but the most interesting point is the critical role of #modularity as the great David #Parnas pointed out a long time ago.

(4) Get BIG things done: #LEGO fix

LEGO picking the plastic brick in the 1950s as the centerpiece of its business = a fitting #corporatestrategy: LEGO turned a small thing into something much bigger.

“That’s the question every project leader should ask: What is the small thing we can #assemble in large numbers into a big thing? What’s our LEGO?”
-#BentFlyvbjerg, #Oxford economist.

0.5% of big projects: delivered on budget. Dr. #Flyvbjerg’s lessons on why they succeed, are the LEGO fix.

Think slow, act fast

#Megaprojects are late bc not enough time spent planning (minimize uncertainty, shrink risk).

#FrankGehry’s #Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened on time & under budget: experimenting w/designs & models for 2 yrs.

Big things doesn’t mean Gehry poring over blueprints. You could just play w/LEGOS.

“A block of LEGO is a small thing, but by assembling more than 9k of them, you can build 1 of the biggest sets LEGO makes.” -Dr. #Flyvbjerg #WSJ
