Climate change caused an estimated 1,500 deaths in recent European heat wave
Scientists have linked last week’s European heat wave to human-caused climate change and estimate that climate change was responsible for 1,500 deaths. Wednesday's study by researchers at Imperial College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine examined what happened in a dozen European cities wracked by high heat. It found that climate change added 2 to 4 degrees Celsius to natural summer temperatures in most cities. Milan, Barcelona, Spain, and Paris had the highest death tolls blamed on climate change. Overall, scientists estimate that about 2,300 people died in the cities from the heat, with nearly two-thirds of those deaths attributable to burning of coal, oil and gas.
