I think of pomegranates and citrus this time of year for all the homegrown pickings I would crack open with my uncle, and all the citrus I would juice with my aunt... and all the sangria we'd make to reward ourselves at the end of the day. I really treasure those memories.
In some parts of the world pomegranates play a role in religious and cultural iconography, and I love that one of my favorite fruits has such a rich and beautiful tradition.
For me it's not the holiday season without pomegranates. So even though I'm far from home and my family's trees, pomegranates will always be found in my home this time of year. <3

Anyone else grow up with a mom who collected the annual Southern Living Christmas books? I remember the collection lived in the end-table by the fireplace, next to a bevy of other crafting books.
I was never interested in the recipes as a kid, but the craft pages were magic to me.

Recently I've picked up a handful of my own from the collection and have a renewed appreciation for all the information and beautiful photos they hold within their pages.

That admiration for Southern Living Christmas books must be seeping into my subconscious, because I can't help but think of those books when I look at these photos.

At my grandmother's house when I was a kid, I always looked forward to the pomegranates coming ripe. Now that I live in a colder climate I can't just go pluck them off her tree, but seeing them in the grocery store made me homesick. This whole spread was inspired by my love of traditional Christmas imagery. Pomegranates, whole spices, preserved and foraged treasures from nature, and the rich jeweltones of it all.

This is my little homage to it all. <3 <3 <3
