Farmers Insurance doesn't honor "Small Estate" probate, discriminates against low-income people
We recently had a death in the family (Tom). He was owed a refund of around $300.
There is a "normal" probate process which involves a court, and the "going rate" for simple no-frills probate case is around $5000. Luckily in California (and something like 30+ other states) there is a "Small Estate" process which allows you to settle a loved one's estate out of court.
Apparently Farmers Insurance just... doesn't honor the Small Estate process. At all. It's their "policy". So, rather than taking them to court, we filed a complaint with the California Department of Insurance. They issued the refund checks within 3 days.
