Louise Burke on Instagram: "A small snippet of Famous Blue Raincoat, one of those timeless songs that never lets go. I originally recorded a version of this back in 2021 in my living room, and today I found myself singing it again—just an iPhone, GarageBand, and a simple pair of headphones with the little built-in mic. Nothing fancy. Just a moment that took over. This song has been carried by so many astonishing voices—Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Jennifer Warnes—and somehow it still opens something every time you return to it. I’ve sung this song in beautiful corners of London and New York… but sometimes the most raw version is the one caught at home #leonardcohen #NYC #famousblueraincoat"

#FamousBlueRaincoat by #LeonardCohen. This song is so important to me.

It’s a break-up song, but somehow Leonard is living in the ruins of his relationship with Jane and his unnamed correspondent. Jane’s independence and freedom saves the song from nihilism, though Leonard the writer is torn between her liberation and his loss. He deflects his desire from her to his friend who caused the break-up, which is pathetic, and simultaneously magisterially forgiving.

In the song, there are useful hints of context - Scientology, scepticism, his friend's promiscuity and poverty. I know men like this, damaged by their beliefs and experiences, but also living creatively, and from my (and Leonard's) point of view, with less inhibition and more success.

I often imagine Famous Blue Raincoat as written about a life I nearly lived, but didn't. And I can't at all make up my mind whether that's good or not. Which is the mood intentionally provoked by the song.
