Aerodynamics were soon taking over the technical direction. The 1990s 'Fuelling' was designed with chin & crown spoilers, plus ventilation.

The 1980s heralded the complex XFM1 design, with a stronger shell.
A more aerodynamic & better sealed visor, which was easier to open.
Increasing cornering speeds lead some drivers to tether the helmet with straps to the shoulders to reduce neck strain
