Exo One (surreal game I tooted about yesterday, with the mechanics of a 3D Tiny Wings) is pretty addictive.

And nice looking, to boot.

Anyone remember Unknown Orbit?

I reviewed thousands of iOS games on TouchArcade way back when, and one of my favorites of all time was Exbleative's Unknown Orbit, which was basically Tiny Wings .. in 3D .. in space. It was awesome.

Last night the Steam store put a game called Exo One in front of me. In the preview, it looked something like Tiny Wings .. in 3D .. in space. It's 70% off in the Steam store for a few days (currently $5), so I gave it a go.

"A strange signal... an alien craft... an interplanetary, gravity-defying journey through space and time."

Long story short, it's from Exbleative and appears to be a massive evolution of Unknown Orbit (for PC and Xbox), set on strange, eerie worlds and with a mysterious storyline to unravel.

Having been such a fan of the earlier iOS title, I am thrilled to have found this and am having a great time exploring this universe.

It's absolutely, stunningly gorgeous. You could take a screenshot of the game at any single moment in the game, print it on a square meter of canvas, frame it and mount it anywhere and it'd look like it absolutely belonged there.
Unfortunately, that's the end of the good points of it for me.

I am mindblowned by how Exo One looks great with so little. The rare assets are simple shapes and repetitive textures. But the smart use of shaders and dynamic SFX makes you believe you are actually playing a hyperrealistic game.

Even the cutscenes follow this principle. You think you are watching a movie with real comedians, but it's just free NASA photographies and subtitles on random human noise.

If you are a small game dev team, play Exo One. It's full of clever solutions. #ExoOne
