white abled man thinks posting an anecdote of lifting a woman who used a wheelchair into a gyn chair is something appropriate to write an anecdote about on the internet.

I requested medical evidence to prove my permanent disability to renew my bus pass, GP sent just my medical history to me that has no relevance to my disability & informed me a more tailored one will cost me ยฃ45. And that won't guarantee I'll get my bus pass if I do pay that. FFS!! #EveryDayAbleism

This is in the context of Stranger Things, but no spoilers whatsoever.

So Stranger Things made headlines in past years for its thorough and sometimes gross-out closed captions.

I've been watching S5 and haven't seen any of that. Not only that, but no other cues like "[door slams]" or "[gasps]" or "[haunting choral music]."

Apparently, Netflix started rolling out a "feature" last Spring that in shows going forward, choosing "English" subtitles shows only the dialogue. You have to pick "English [CC]" to get the audio cues as well.

I'm honestly not sure who is served by the former who wouldn't be at least as well served by the latter. But the fuckers seem to have defaulted things to the one without audio cues--i.e., the least accessible thing they could have done. As well as undercutting and concealing the hard work of the sound designers.

Fuck the hard-of-hearing, I guess.

When someone tells you it can't be done when you know it can, you're better off doing it yourself & fucking shove it in the face of the deniers & say "IT CAN BE DONE & FUCKING CHEAPER THAN IF YOU DID IT AS YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE!! Parts ordered to prove the fuckers wrong! #EveryDayAbleism ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ

happy to see that the Betazed sign language on #StarTrekAcademy is basically standard ASL, with a few stylistic choices in the sign to look moreโ€ฆ poetic? anyway, I wish that they'd kept the sign language more in view of the camera.

another thing I wonder is did they cast and hire an actually Deaf/hard of hearing actor for the Betazed president? because if not, I don't like the affected Deaf accent when at the end of the episode he takes off the little interpreter doohickey and voices for himself to say yes.

I mean I really don't like that particular kind of plot device in the first place because it devalues signed languages and places excessive value on voicing, and that people will voice when it becomes important. it leads people to expect voicing from people who sign when it becomes important enough, which is a harmful expectation for #Deaf people to face and a great example of #EverydayAbleism that #Disabled people face on the daily.

Spouse's textbook: "[...]decreased symptoms of psychosomatic illnesses such as asthma and anorexia[...]" [cites: Minuchin, Rosman, & Baker, "Psychosomatic Families: Anorexia Nervosa in Context", 1978"]

Me: ....exsqueeze??? asthma? Psychosomatic?? Also why is a textbook for *2* classes in 2025 citing a study from *1978*?

Spouse: I think [this textbook] is used for a few other classes too.

Me: B r u h.

(Spouse supplied images from their textbook. You're all welcome.)

@mrundkvist @cbuddenhagen It took me under 2 minutes to find it once I managed to zoom in to a size I could read. That you chose to spend that time replying to shift that burden to the requester, and in the process left screenrreader users in the lurch, says a lot about your priorities. #EverydayAbleism
Well I've had my social landlord & kitchen fitters around to discuss the refit of my kitchen. As expected the design is more about what the social landlord wants than my disability requirements, so the design is a compromise than give me what I require tho better than I thought it'll be. So once they're done, I WILL DO THE DISABILITY ADAPTIONS MYSELF as I know ways to get around their ableist views & requirements if they won't. Not the 1st time I've had to! #EveryDayAbleism
This is how our local council promotes what is basically a shared path along the Wivenhoe Trail. Nice a route it is, it's narrow, it's uneven, it's not properly maintained & by their own admission not wheelchair friendly coz they won't properly surface it. #EveryDayAbleism
