@pfriedma I must admit I had some worries the way it began, with crayon like graphics on a chalkboard. I agree that the character development was awesome!
Please join me for a very special episode of The 7th Rule podcast co-hosted by Cirroc Lofton and guest Tawny Newsome.

Do I need to rewatch all of DS9?
Jo. 🫣
Live long and prosper 🖖
I had decided not to watch Starfleet Academy because I have been disappointed by Strange New Worlds' defanging, and the new ownership's cotowing to Donald Trump.
I also, unfairly, held it responsible for the death of Prodigy, which - with season 2 in particular - is some of the best Star Trek I've seen in my lifetime.
The marketing materials were, in a word, harmful. True, I'm basing this off 4 episodes, but there's a depth there.
The show is targeting a newer audience -- presumably those who came on with Discovery -- and it seems like it has something to say.
I didn't like the pilot. I don't like the... contemporary speech (something all live-action Treks have had a problem with under Kurtzman), but episodes 2, 3 and now especially 4 have kept me coming back and looking forward to more.
I don't know where it's going to go for the rest of season 1, and especially with season 2. Who knows if it gets a season 3. But I'm glad in this case that my resolve softened and I gave it a chance.
And I'm especially thankful for Sean and the crew over at WhatCulture for standing up, showing their support from the word "go", and inviting weekly discussions with each episode.
Academy continues the timeline. It's the "present" of Star Trek whether we like it, and it reflects the issues of today. It's worthy of your time. Go with in with an open mind. Give it a few episodes. Every single Trek has has to feel itself out in the first season, and Academy is no different.
