Invitation for the opening of the group exhibition "Decoding the Black Box" on 26.01.2024 at 7 pm with Anonymous, Aram Bartholl, James Bridle, Adam Harvey, Femke Herregraven, Jonas Lund, the !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Metahaven, Chino Moya, Olsen, Mimi Onuoha, Evan Roth and Eryk Salvaggio.

As part of the opening a performance by Valentina Vuksic will take place and we are also looking forward to a DJ set by Rotary Farm aka Evan Roth!

The artists gathered in the exhibition "Decoding the Black Box" shed light on the processes that take place in our end devices, the black boxes. While the capitalist and power-political structures of the internet and the virtual image economy are made transparent, the artists envision counter-designs for a decentralized and democratic use of technologies.

»Wie Infrastruktur und geographische Entfernungen soziale Ungleichheit zementieren interessiert auch den amerikanischen Künstler Evan Roth, der seit Jahren mit Videos die Orte dokumentiert, an denen die globalen Internet-Tiefseekabel an Land kommen. Zu sehen sind reizvolle Strände, unter denen aber die Leitungen verlaufen, mit denen global Kapital und Macht verteilt werden. Diese Arbeiten haben ihnen nun zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit Weltkarten geführt, die scheinbar objektiv den Erdball zeigen, auf denen aber – wie bei der bis heute gängigen Mercator-Projektion – Alaska größer als Afrika ist.
Um die Nachteile der verschiedenen gängigen Darstellungsweisen zu vermeiden und eine Debatte über Macht und Kartographierung anzustoßen, hat er ein Programm geschrieben und online veröffentlicht, mit dem man seine eigene Kartierungsprojektionen auf den Globus anwenden kann. So entstandene Bilder waren im vergangenen Jahr bereits im Kartenlesesaal der Berliner Staatsbibliothek zu sehen. Im Projektraum /rosa am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz waren zur @transmediale nun Bilder vom Himmel über Berlin zu sehen, die mit diesen Kartierungsalgorithmen bearbeitet worden waren.«

panke.gallery seeks to open up a dialogue between established and emerging artists whose work comes out of the connections between digital or net-based art and club culture, especially in the recent history of Berlin. Its program of exhibitions and events takes place in a gallery space within the premises of panke.club.

As part of @transmediale 2023, Evan Roth will show a new series of works called 'Skyscapes: Berlin-Mitte' at /rosa and the Akademie der Künste. The pieces are created from photographs taken of the sky around his home in Berlin and manipulated using historic cartographic techniques. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣The work is on view at the Akademie der Künste from 1-5 February and at /rosa starting 2 February, with an opening at /rosa that evening. Please join if you are in Berlin!⁣⁣

Creating prints, sculptures, videos and websites, Roth is interested in the philosophies of hacker communities, as applied to digital and non-digital systems, and in the relationship between misuse and self-empowerment.
