Meeting Mr. Thomas by Rene Thomas, released on Barclay in 1963.

Marc Myers wrote for Jazz Wax:

"One of my favorite recordings by Thomas is Meeting Mister Thomas for the French Barclay label. On this album from 1963, Thomas led a quintet featuring saxophonist and flutist Jacques Pelzer, organist Lou Bennett, bassist Gilbert Rovere and drummer Charles Bellonzi. Thomas' sound in the early 1960s was ambitious, robust and modern, with enormous optimism built in. He employed a spirited technique that never gave hint that a pick was being used on the strings. Imagine a woodpecker hammering away on a rubber tree. Add Bennett's organ, and the group's sound was remarkably cool and distinctly European—swift but never frantic..."

Today's selection in Jazz is from a tribute concert to Germany's Jazz giant, bassist Eberhard Weber. Now in his 80's, in 2015 ECM Records put together an album celebrating his compositions and influence on European Jazz. The tune I'm sharing today is Tübingen as arranged for the SWR Big Band. Joining the band are Gary Burton whom I consider the GOAT on Vibes and Paul McCandless on English Horn (famous for his role in the band Oregon). Enjoy! #jazz #eurojazz #bigband

Today's jazz selection is from Poland. The Marcin Wasilewski Trio is a wonderful reminder of how beautiful jazz trios can be with the intricacies of tonal colors and space. I especially love the brush work from the drummer as it is a bit of a lesser known art these days. So mellow out and be ready to just listen and slow down. This is Austin by the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. #jazz #eurojazz

Today's jazz selection is another Euro-jazz album Neighborhood, from French drummer Manu Katché on ECM records. Manu has played with everyone in Pop music and European Jazz and is well known as the drummer for Sting. The groove of "Number One" is smooth but relentless. In many ways this selection is reminiscent of of some of the best mid-sixties Herbie Hancock recordings. So sit back and enjoy! #jazz #eurojazz #drums

Today's jazz clip is from another Scandinavian country, Sweden. The Esbjörn Svensson Trio is beautifully melancholy. Unfortunately Esbjörn passed too early so the recordings are limited, but this one is a favorite of mine.
