Trump administration revokes guidance to hospitals on emergency abortions
The Trump administration has announced that it is revoking guidance to the nation’s hospitals that directed them to provide emergency abortions to women when they are necessary to stabilize their medical condition. That guidance was issued to hospitals in 2022, weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court upended national abortion rights in the U.S. It was an effort by the Biden administration to preserve abortion access for extreme cases in which women were experiencing medical emergencies and needed an abortion to prevent organ loss or severe hemorrhaging, among other serious complications. An Associated Press inquiry last year found that, even with that guidance, dozens of pregnant women were being turned away from emergency rooms, including some who needed emergency abortions.
AP NewsYup. There it is. The fourth #SCOTUS ruling of the day is the #Idaho emergency-#abortion ruling that was *inadvertently* posted yesterday. The #SupremeCourt allows — for now — #EmergencyAbortions to stabilize patients in Idaho, despite the state’s strict #AbortionBan. The high court ruling applies while #litigation in the matter continues.

The decision would reinstate a lower court order that had ensured #hospitals in #Idaho could perform #EmergencyAbortions to protect the #health of the mother. The briefly posted version indicated the majority will dismiss appeals by Idaho & #Republican leaders in the state without resolving the core issues in the case.

The decision, which has not been announced by the court, would mean that
#hospitals could perform
#EmergencyAbortions to stabilize patients w/o being subject to prosecution under Idaho’s
#AbortionBan. It would be at least a temporary victory for the
#Biden admin, which has struggled to protect
#AbortionAccess since the high court overturned
#RoeVWade 2 yrs ago.

Supreme Court would allow emergency abortions for now, early opinion says
The prematurely published decision says Idaho hospitals may perform emergency abortions to stabilize patients while litigation on the matter continues.

Conservative justices appear skeptical federal law requires emergency abortion care
The Supreme Court hears arguments in Idaho vs U.S. relating to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. Justices will decide whether a federal law requiring hospitals care for life-threatening cases means ER doctors in states with abortion bans must terminate pregnancies in certain circumstances.
