An #electricutility made an unusual proposal to help law enforcement target these illicit #marijuana operations, however, worry the move would violate customers’ #privacy.
“Versant has a very high success rate in being able to identify these locations, but we have no ability to communicate with law enforcement proactively,” Myrick-Stockdell told commissioners. It’d be far more efficient to flip script and allow electric utilities to report suspicions to #lawenforcement.

A Maine utility wants to be an ally with law enforcement in the crackdown on illegal marijuana grow operations — if it can overcome privacy concerns. Law enforcement officials have learned that a spike in electricity usage is a hallmark of sophisticated marijuana grow operations hidden inside rural homes in Maine. A lawyer for Versant Power says the utility has been cooperating when it receives subpoenas from law enforcement. But he says it'd be far more efficient to proactively report suspicions to police. Critics say the proposal to be discussed by regulators next week runs afoul of consumer privacy protections.

@davidho this is an excellent example of how the #electricutility grid is evolving from central energy suppliers to centralized energy managers.

Every business and household should participate in rooftop solar and have their own battery backup ( through a #homebattery, and their #electricvehicles adding significant energy storage for a home )

The grid becomes the central energy buffer. And everyone uses less net energy, and becomes more self reliant during outages.

The electric rates in #Kenya 🇰🇪 are high because most of the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are "Take Or Pay" -- meaning the contracted quantity of electricity units is paid for, regardless if they are used or not.
i.e., Kenya Power customers pay for idle capacity that goes unused.
