Edward S Herman: Scholar whose radical critiques of US media characterised the fake news caricatured by Trump | The Independent

Noam Chomsky, co-author of ‘Manufacturing Consent’, told The Independent Herman was an ‘inspiration’ to those following in his footsteps in media studies, ‘exposing hypocrisy and lies’

> #RachelCarson's Silent Spring in 1962, preceded by a derived series of articles in the New Yorker, temporarily broke the chemical industry's command over the flow of information on pesticides and other chemicals. There had been critical articles and letters of protest over the broadscale use of DDT and other poisons, but these were only occasional and hardly disturbed the industry's informational hegemony.

Corporate Junk Science In The Media (Part 1) By Edward S. Herman

> The concept of "junk science" broadened to arenas outside the courtroom in 1989 when pro-industry groups used the term to attack what has come to be known as "the great Alar scare." Alar was a chemical, first marketed in 1968, that apple growers sprayed on trees to make their apples ripen longer before falling off. In use, however, Alar breaks down to a byproduct called "unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine" or UDMH...

>With Trump soon back in the White House, and people like Orbán cheering him on from the sidelines, can the hard right bring the media to heel?
>
>In the past the answer would have been a speedy no. The United States has major constitutional protections of First Amendment rights, and a strong commitment to freedom of the press.

The "mainstream media" *is* right wing. All of it. Perhaps not as far right wing as Trump would like, but *all* of it is right wing. If I could choose only one book to require every American to read, it would be Inventing Reality by Michael Parenti.

>There will be people who say, “Hey, you work for a company and that company has the right to expect employees to adhere to what’s good for the company”. That’s true except we’re talking about news organizations that have public obligations and who are obliged to nurture a free press in a democracy. Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press.

Under capitalism, news organizations have no such "public obligations" and are absolutely not "obliged to nurture a free press in a democracy." They are doing what they are designed to do: Invent Reality (or, if you prefer, Manufacture Consent).

I honestly think that reading Inventing Reality, by Michael Parenti, should be a prerequisite to working in journalism:

Political and Moral Disarray

In short, in the 2016 presidential election the U.S. citizenry did not have an effective choice of a candidate who would turn away from the permanent war system and corporate welfare state; that is, one who had any chance of winning

What contains the containers?
> Earlier we had been obliged to contain North Vietnam, or was it the Soviet Union in Vietnam? Or China? Or “communism”? Or maybe all of them? Or none of them, but just needing an excuse to enlarge power? (On Vietnam, but with wider applicability, see Gareth Porter, The Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam, University of California Press, 2005.)

who is going to contain the United States? The U.S. political system has failed its populace and the world and has imposed no brakes on the war machine

Finally reading an important book and finding background for Andre Vitchek's article about Indonesia and Chile:

> The huge massacres in Indonesia, 1965-1969, have a threefold importance. In the first place, they constitute a new phase in counterrevolutionary violence marked by resort to “mass extermination in an attempt to consolidate authoritarian power.”
