Finally reading an important book and finding background for Andre Vitchek's article about Indonesia and Chile:

> The huge massacres in Indonesia, 1965-1969, have a threefold importance. In the first place, they constitute a new phase in counterrevolutionary violence marked by resort to “mass extermination in an attempt to consolidate authoritarian power.”

.> And the more I carry with me; the more my thinking actually becomes blurred; it is slowing down, diverted from real issues..> The honest conclusion is: “The more gadgets I have, the worse the results of my work are.”.> Then why can’t I ‘lighten up’ even further? ....> Actually, to write my fiction or poetry, all I need is my notepads and a decent pen, or a small computer..> I essentially only need the same notepads and a pen, plus one Leica, to create vivid and detailed essays from warzones – what is called war reporting or ‘investigative journalism’.....> After many years of research I have come to the conclusion that some parts of the world, particularly Southeast Asia, were being used as guinea pigs in a lab for experiments on human beings. After some horrifying coups and bloodletting, people have been fully indoctrinated with market fundamentalism. The fetish of gadgets was injected with tremendous force, at the same time as hundreds of millions of people were contaminated with the lowest form of pop culture. Those who resisted were murdered or made irrelevant. Thinking and creativity were discouraged and discredited.... #AndreVitchek working on ideas seen in his comparison of #ChileAndIndonesia #SantiagoAndJakarts #JakartaIsComing #GadgetsAreComing

> They have become the purpose of life, replacing culture and local art, deeply influencing and trivializing language, and the way that people communicate.
> Creativity has fully collapsed...

1984: Violeta Parra Community

The Stolen Name

.> The dictatorship of General Pinochet changes the names of twenty bone-poor communities, tin and cardboard houses, on the outskirts of Santiago de Chile. In the rebaptism, the Violeta Parra community gets the name of some military hero. But its inhabitants refuse to bear this unchosen name. They are Violeta Parra or nothing..> A while back they had decided in unanimous assembly to name themselves after the campesina singer with the raspy voice who in her songs of struggle knew how to celebrate Chile’s mysteries..> Violeta was sinful and saucy, given to guitar-strumming and long talks and falling in love, and with all her dancing and clowning around she kept burning the empanadas...> Thanks to life, which has given me so much, she sang in her last song; and a turbulent love affair sent her off to her death. --- (334 and 440) #VioletaParra in #EduardoGaleano's #MemoryOfFire trilogy, #CenturyOfWind

I was looking for paragraphs about Victor Jara but found Violeta Parra instead. But Eduardo Galeano provides other ideas that help to think about
#AndreVitchek's article comparing #Chile and #GeneralPinochet with #Indonesia and #GeneralSuharto..

1979: Santiago de Chile

Stubborn Faith.> General Pinochet stamps his signature on a decree that imposes private property on the Mapuche Indians. The government offers funds, fencing, and seeds to those who agree to parcel out their communities with good grace. If not, the government warns, they’ll accept without any grace..> Pinochet is not the first to believe that greed is part of human nature and that God wants it that way. Long ago, the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia had tried to break up the indigenous communities of Chile. Since then, by fire and sword everything has been seized from the Indians, everything: land, language, religion, customs. But __the Indians, hemmed in, trapped in poverty, exhausted by so much war and so much swindling, persist in believing that the world is a shared home.__ #OurSharedHome... Wasn't Pope Francis of Laudato Si and Fratelli Tutti fame posted to Chile for a few years... I saw somewhere that he was there during an awful Water Privatization scheme that, of course, damaged a lot of people...

.> The Chilean military junta began with the same zeal as its Indonesian counterpart of eight years earlier. In Jakarta, religious Muslim cadres almost immediately joined the killing and torture, while in Santiago; it was conservative Christendom, particularly Opus Dei, which threw its support behind the murderers and rapists of General Pinochet. In both places ‘conservative family values’ were evoked, to justify the most appalling atrocities.
.> The streets of Santiago and other Chilean cities fell silent. Horror was omnipresent. Doors were kicked open by military boots and people dragged to dungeons, tortured, raped, murdered.
.> The National Stadium was filled with men and women. Like in Jakarta, noble, educated people were tortured and beaten, even killed with absolutely no scruples.
.... [the paragraph in the post that begins this thread].> This was the most significant moment – I would insist, the crucial moment. The moment when Santiago and Jakarta parted! The moment when in South America, an extremely long and difficult process began: the process, which could be described as the fight for freedom, for true freedom, not for that empty fake slogan that has been repeated over and over again by Western propaganda.
.> Because at that moment, Victor Jara stood up, in terrible pain but undefeated, full of spite, and sang to his tormentors, straight at their filthy muzzles, “Venceremos!”
.> He sang loud, and after a while, they were overwhelmed by his voice and the lyrics, they aimed at him and shot him dead.
.> But he did not die, instead he became the symbol of resistance, of the struggle against fascism and imperialism. He became the symbol of the struggle that is still continuing and gaining momentum in so many parts of the world!

> At one point, the soldiers came and arrested a bard; one of the most beloved singers of Latin America, Victor Jara. They broke his hands. Then they threw his guitar at him and shouted: “Now you can sing!”
