Periodic Table Personalities

I've posted a "Periodic Table Personalities" resource over on Middle School Matters.

Periodic Table Personalities is the embodiment of the personification of those elements that make up our world.

Students simply answer a few questions about themselves to find that elemental connection. That's right, students answer some (16) questions and t

Students Marking Up Digital Text

How to replace the half-sheet of paper with the "problem of the day" on it. Instead, use digital tools for students to mark up the story problem.

Twine & Markdown

I'm working on my Fall ACTEM presentation. The presentation is on "Choose Your Own Adventure: Create An Adventure for Your Students". Specifically, how you can create these for students. Or, better yet, how students can create these.

While working in Twine (I wrote about Twine previously), I wrote some things in Markdown. Since Twine doesn't have a "viewer" window, p

Teaching achievement unlocked: today a Y9 pupil brought me a rock (to keep!) and was able to tell me what type it was. A rock to keep! The kids are lovely. #eduglow

Thanks so much for the presenters for this session. I think that this will be available for replay at Reclaim TV. If you missed the session, you should check it out.

Frayer Model

I've long been a fan of the Frayer Model. This is an easy to use, flexible graphic organizer that can help students understand concepts. It is most commonly used for vocabulary words, but can be extended as well.

Forgot to share my #Eduglow this week. Kids are just lovely sometimes. This glorious moment comes to you courtesy of a frequently-disengaged pupil I managed to charm last year:

“Miss! You’re a brilliant teacher! I’m finding atomic structure revision with my new teacher so easy!”

I told her “Actually no, Lyla, you’re finding it easy because you’re really clever and a great scientist.”
Maybe she will believe it, because she trusts me.

#Eduglow from year 9 parents evening, held online:
One meeting is with rock chick mum and scowling Y9 pupil in a Slipknot t-shirt.
Mum finishes the meeting with “X often says how lovely you are and how much he loves science.”
My heart! #Teaching
Teaching can be a tough, joyless job sometimes, but on other days you get a Yr 8 student who reimagines Much Ado by having Disney-style talking cows for characters and calling it "Much A-Moo About Nothing" and you literally cry with laughter #MuchAMoo #Cows #Shakespeare #Education #Teaching #EduGlow @edutooters

Today’s #EduGlow Two of my Y10 chemists came in and sang a song of their own composition to me, a capella, standing round a lab bench. Haunting, raw with emotion. Sent shivers down my spine! Gorgeous moment. Makes all the shit from SLT worth it.*

*some of the shit. there’s a lot.
