徳島県美馬市に倉科智子さんが建てた日本初のオフグリッド住宅〈アースシップ〉。「快適でオシャレ」と「地球に負荷をかけない」を両立させた住宅である。廃タイヤに土を詰めた壁、空き缶や空き瓶も大量に利用するなど、資材のユニークさが特徴だ。太陽光や風力などの自然エネルギーを利用し、生活用水は雨水でまかなっている。世界各国から集まった建築素人たちでつくりあげた。

※Earthshipとは1970年代からアメリカ人建築家マイケルレイノルズ氏が実験に実験を重ね建て続けているオフグリッドハウス（公共のインフラを必要としない建物）の名称です。いわゆるゴミと言われる古タイヤや空きビン、空き缶を建材として使用したこの建物は、年間通し室内気温がほぼ２１度前後を保つため、冷暖房器具を必要としません。室内で使用する水は全て屋根でキャッチした雨水をろ過して使い、風呂や洗面で使用した水が建物内に植えられた植物の根元を通り、これらの植物を自動的に育てます。現在世界中におよそ１５００棟以上建設されています。"

十分に機能しているものをEarthshipと呼ぶことができます。
