Today's bit of #EcoGeek stuff (1/2):

I got a press release a couple days ago (yeah, I'm still on some people's lists apparently) about an FSC certified product that first surprised me, but then instantly made sense.

Forest Stewardship Council is an organization that promotes sustainable use of wood and forest products. I've been aware of their work for a long time, since use of FSC certified wood can be a part of getting LEED certification for a building.

But how does that matter for cars?

Friction stir welding for metal was mind blowing enough when I first heard about it. I think I sorta understand it now.

But, now they're talking about friction welding for /wood/ ?!?

I gotta get back to some kind of #EcoGeek ish blogging; there's still weird and interesting and exciting stuff coming along out there.

(Also, wood towers for wind turbines; biochar as a substitute for sand as a fine aggregate in concrete; and that's just in the first month of this year!)

Get your Paolo Bacigalupi windup on. Cool thread on the sail powered Arianne transporter.

This is 100% #EcoGeek fuel!

The 121m-long, 22m-wide ship is powered by two 3,840kW diesel engines and four huge wingsails, 363 sq m each. Significantly more powerful than conventional sails, these automated 37m-high vertical wings reduce average fuel consumption by ~30%.
