Hala Strana (translated from the Old Bulgarian which mean "salted shore") is the name of a recording project of American musician Steven R. Smith. Smith began recording under the name in 2002 as an outlet which allowed him to explore the traditional music of Eastern Europe more fully than possible with his solo work. Although numerous musicians have contributed to the project, including Glenn Donaldson, Loren Chasse, and Darren Ankenman, most Hala Strana recordings are solo productions. Musical Interlude: Fishtank Ensemble is one of my great musical whiffs. They had a rare East Coast date long ago in DC, before I moved away, and I had a chance to go...but I was tired, and thought, meh, they'll be around again.

OF COURSE, they never did come again, and now they are no more. I kick myself for not taking the opportunity when I could. They were a great world-music band, with Eastern European stylings mixed with Japanese instruments and theremin. Wild stuff.
