An Experiment with the Use of ChatGPT for LCSH Subject Assignment on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study delves into the potential use of large language models (LLMs) for generating Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The authors employed ChatGPT to generate subject headings for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) based on their titles and abstracts. The results suggests that LLMs such as ChatGPT have the potential to reduce cataloging time needed for assigning LCSH subject terms for ETDs as well as to improve the discovery of this type of resource in academic libraries. Nonetheless, human catalogers remain essential for verifying and enhancing the validity, exhaustivity, and specificity of LCSH generated by LLMs.
Roxanne ShiraziI have a #copyright question related to #dissertations: say a student works at a US federally-run museum and has been given dispensation to write their dissertation related to its holdings, but the institution says it is work-for-hire so the author won’t retain copyright. My sense is that this is because it’s a federal employer.
What are the chances they’d be able to negotiate an agreement that gives the author copyright?They are concerned about future publishing opportunities, etc. #libraries #etds

Opening Theses and Dissertations with PIDs and Metadata
As research and scholarship become more global and interconnected, the research community faces the challenge of recognizing and demonstrating the impact of all types of contributions. In this context, persistent identifiers (PIDs) can help leverage connections between local infrastructures and global information resources, as they can uniquely identify different entities (researchers, institutions, outputs and resources) in the research ecosystem (Ferguson et alI 2019). For this reason, PIDs and their associated metadata can be considered the building blocks of research infrastructure (Meadows et al., 2019). In addition, PIDs play a central role in the Open Science framework as they can increase transparency and recognition in research, and facilitate integration and interoperability, as well as making research FAIR (Wilkinson et al. 2016).This poster has been presented during the 26th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations ETD 2023, hosted by Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) in Gujarat, India.
