Drake Fireworks Light Up the Toronto City Skyline

Did you see the fireworks last night?

After hearing rumours of a surprise display on the waterfront — later confirmed by a City of Toronto tweet around 7 p.m. — my wife and I decided to walk down the street to catch a glimpse. Living by the lake gives us the benefit of a phenomenal skyline view, something many of our guests always appreciate, so we headed down around 10:30.

My phone camera doesn’t do the view justice 😂

My Twitter feed was spinning with theories, and once the event was confirmed to be connected to Drake, alongside the announcement of a livestream at 9:45, we stood by the water watching the YouTube feed unfold.

The presentation featured a collection of music videos tied to his new album, filled with imagery and recognizable settings from around the city. The CN Tower was frozen over with projection mapping that our city had never seen before. The night culminated in a ten-minute fireworks display that we had a perfect view of from the shoreline.

Funny enough, there were plenty of other people gathered at the same spot watching alongside us. I imagine there were groups scattered all across the waterfront trying to catch a view. Realistically, if you had an unobstructed sightline along the lake, it would have been hard to miss.

And these weren’t modest fireworks either. The display felt worthy of a Victoria Day long weekend celebration. For a moment, it genuinely had me questioning what day of the week it was.

All in all, I haven’t even listened to the album yet, and usually time needs to pass before we can properly critique a project or understand where it fits historically. But this entire promotional rollout has felt like a travelling carnival — ice blocks, impromptu appearances, cryptic moments spread throughout the city.

Still, what Drake gave Toronto last night felt unforgettable. One of those rare city moments that people will look back on fondly years from now.

Where were you when the fireworks lit up the sky on May 14?
