A story that will be popular here, “Dutch set to outlaw fireworks”:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/09/dutch-netherlands-fireworks-ban-new-years-eve
I love fireworks. Not watching the display, I’ve seen peak firework display, I’ve had my fill. No, I love playing with fireworks, have done since I was way too young to be doing so.
As teenagers we used to buy penny rockets and shoot them at each other across dark misty fields bazooka style from cardboard poster tubes, the smoke trails hanging in the air long after the culminating crack.
We would blow apart old toys with large red French ‘petards’ bought on school day-trips to Boulogne where they were available all year round.
More recently I’ve enjoyed dropping firecrackers down road drains with number one youngster, and delighting in the hollow echoing booms.
But I can’t deny that all this was at some risk to myself and others, plus the disturbance to all animals, including my fellow humans.
I agree with this legislation, and hope it is the start of a trend across the rest of Europe.
