The Netherlands is banning consumer fireworks this year, which is huge news for both people and wildlife!
This ban comes after decades of campaigning by animal welfare groups and after over 1,000 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries during last year's New Year's celebrations.
Fireworks can also trigger veterans with PTSD and they release toxic chemicals that pollute our environment.
And if pets could talk, they'd probably be pretty relieved to hear this news too.
Up to 50% of dogs are afraid of fireworks, and will hide, shake, or flee, as they’re unable to process what’s going on.
Shelters actually see a 30% increase in missing pets during New Year as terrified animals run away.
Fireworks also startle birds who take off in a panic, leading to exhaustion and collisions, and some can't find their way back to their babies.
So Starting at New Year's Eve 2026, the sale of fireworks will be illegal across the Netherlands, and the majority of Dutch people wanted to see this happen.
