Dorothy Alison's “Bastard Out of Carolina” stands apart from the "poornography" genre—stories about poverty written by outsiders, according to University of Chicago English professor Leonard Davis.

Allison, who passed away on November 5, drew deeply from her own impoverished childhood to create a raw, authentic world that never lost its gritty roots.

Dorothy Allison was an authentic voice for the poor, capturing the beauty, humor and pain of working-class life in America

Even though her most famous work, ‘Bastard out of Carolina,’ deals with physical and sexual abuse, this merely constitutes one element of a broader emotional and physical landscape.

I just quoted Dorothy Allison on the subject of doing the “right” thing.

News of her death came late to me. I had the privilege of meeting her and I admired her immensely.

I missed this, but the great Dorothy Allison has died. BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA is a must read..

Never got the chance to interview her, but I once had a spirited debate with her about Mark Twain at a book festival in my twenties and I greatly appreciated how she did not back down and, after we vociferously disagreed, she told me that she liked my guts. And I said that the feeling was mutual.

Dorothy Allison, Author of ‘Bastard Out of Carolina,’ Dies at 75

So sad to hear about the death of Dorothy Allison. Her writing had a big impact on my younger self, especially the collection of essays, Skin: Talking about Sex, Class and Literature

If you'd like an entry into Allison's work, I'd probably go for the memoir, 'Two or Three Things I Know for Sure', or the short story collection, 'Trash'.
