New Read - Disney Stitch! (Complete Series)

So, I had previously read "Stitch! Best Friends Forever" which is a collection of manga stories about Stitch. This is the original series that the previous post was based on.

Short version is that Stitch crash lands accidentally in Japan on island in Okinawa. Stitch befriends a local girl named Yuna and goofiness ensues. The entire series is just one goofy event after another of Stitch trying to do good deeds.

At any point, Stitch could go home to Lilo in Hawaii, but chooses not to to continue to have silly slice of life adventures with Yuna instead. Pleakey and Jumba even show up to even sillier effect.

This was what confused me about the original manga I had read. It was set surrounding the stories of the original manga, so it was side stories that would supplement this one and, reiterate some of the origin tales and closing chapters for new readers. But, for me, a person going in blind, that one was confusing. This one was less so.

The TokyoPop compilation of the two volumes of Stitch also includes some Lilo and Stitch comics in the middle. These ones are just little slice of life day to day adventures of Lilo and Stitch in Hawaii.

The high point of the entire series, for me, was a single chapter where Stitch and a rooster who hates everyone end up competing and fighting. Screenshot included of them boxing.

TL;DR If you want goofy, slice of life with Stitch from Lilo and Stitch where he's crash landing as a fish out of water in Japan, check it out. If that doesn't appeal to you, then ignore it.

So, I see that TokyoPop is rereleasing the ridiculous Disney manga Kilala Princess in an omnibus format. Looks like 2 volumes in place of the original 5.

...

This series is so silly. Let's just save that one for later...

So, I pre-ordered the Stitch Manga omnibus. The day it was supposed to arrive, I get a message saying it was back ordered and that they'd deliver it when it gets back in stock.

This...this was why I pre-ordered in the first place. So I'd have it when it dropped.

Oh well. I can wait.

...For now.

Manga Monday from the beach!

Not sure how this happened, but "Donald Duck Visits Japan" has become one of my go to books to bring on vacation and read from the beach.

It is silly, it is self contained, it is fun, and it is easy fluff about Donald and friends being bad employees and forced to become good workers at an inn in Japan.

Anyway, happy Monday from vacation!

New Read - Disney Stitch: Best Friends Forever

Story time to start. Sorry, I can't help myself.

My youngest two are 9 and this week they had a Scholastic Book Fair. One thing that they've found is that, from time to time, there is Disney manga at the book fair from TokyoPop. Which, by the way, there were no comic books at Scholastic Book Fairs when I was a kid, but I digress.

As my youngest like Lilo and Stitch, they picked up this volume called "Stitch: Best Friends Forever!" Short version: It's cute.

The story has Stitch's ship crash landing in an island in Okinawa. While there, Stitch becomes friends with a local girl named Yuna and goofiness ensues. This single volume has self-contained stories in each individual chapter of Stitch getting into silly / funny situations with an elementary aged girl and her friends.

This is, however, a compilation volume. There is a full, two volume Stitch manga that was previously released. "Best Friends Forever" picks some fan favorite chapters and mashes them together in what, at times, feels like no particular order. It's not bad, but it does give you kind of whiplash from time to time

Long story short, it's a taste of the Stitch manga. If you enjoy it (which we did), then it's worth checking out the full series (which I probably will with my kids).

It's a cute, all ages manga about Stitch and a different friend in Japan. If you like cute kid's manga, check it out.

Donald Duck Visits Japan is silly.

The single volume series follows Donald and his buddies José Carioca and Panchito from the classic cartoon #TheThreeCaballeros work for Duck Furnishings in the US. Being that it is this trio, they're always getting into trouble. So, their boss sends the three of them to Japan to become better employees by forcing them to work at a traditional, and very strict, Onsen in Japan.

Basically, it's a goofy story about Donald and friends becoming good at helping / serving others while working at an Onsen. That's it.

I have read this a few times and so have a few of my kids. It's silly, it's relaxing, and I tend to bring it with me on vacations if I'm looking for something quick to read at the beach.

Are there any single volume manga that you go back to and re-read to relax? Let me know in the comments!

Reader’s Corner: Sugar Apple Fairy Tale (Vol. 2), My Girlfriend’s Child (Vol. 3), and Rascal Does Not Dream of His Student

We’ve got something for you to be thankful for this week—oodles of new manga and light novel releases! We’re reviewing not one, but two new releases in the Rascal Does Not Dream series!…

Beneath the Tangles
What would happen if Stitch, from Lilo and Stitch, crash landed in Japan during the Warring States period instead of in modern Hawai'i?

That's the question that the late Hiroto Wada answered in the manga series "Stitch and the Samurai" (Tono-sama to Stitch).

The art is so very well done and feels like a historical manga. Then enter Stitch, who is drawn exactly like he looks in the movie. The juxtaposition of serious looking historical manga art with the goofiness of Stitch is jarring and hilarious. Also, our titular Lord / Samurai becoming so head over heels obsessed with Stitch is something else.

TokyoPop consolidated all three volumes of it into a single, physical release omnibus, which is a great way to read it. I already read it and reviewed it digitally for @[email protected] a while back, but it was fun to re-read it again.

Now, to convince my Stitch loving kids to check it out too.

Happy #MangaMonday!

From Halloween until Christmas is, officially, The Nightmare Before Christmas Season! So, let's talk abut the official manga adaptation.

Do you already like the movie a lot and are super familiar with the plot? If so, this is a welcome addition to any collection you may have for that series. If you are not, watch the movie first. While the art is great and fitting for the series, the pacing is okay but moves a bit too quick through certain plot points that without some baseline familiarity with the material a person may get lost.

That said, I've seen the movie likely a hundred times at this point in my life. So, I enjoyed it!

Have you read the manga adaptation? Or have you seen any of the spinoff manga?

Let me know in the comments!

Here's some of my recent #manga pickups. I pre-ordered all of them and have basically been getting a new volume a week all month. Next week comes the next hard cover volume of #FistOfTheNorthStar, so that will be very cool!

I love the #AnimalCrossing manga. It's been a fun trip for an ACNH player like me. This volume brings us a #HappyHomeParadise chapter that's really silly.

#StitchAndTheSamurai I've read before. Executive summary: Stitch crashes his spacecraft in the Sengoku (Warring States) Period of Japanese history and a brutal warlord suddenly becomes obsessed with the cuteness of Stitch. And hilarity ensues. My kids are going to really love this.

#SailorMoon is self-explanatory. Next volume from the "Naoko Takeuchi Edition" reprint of the series from #Kodansha. Hyped to keep reading.

And last is #OtakuElf, which I have been really enjoying. Short version: The deity for a local shrine in Japan is actually an elf from another dimension who is a huge nerd. The community and the shrine maiden help her out in her geekiness. It's funny.
