For those looking to support and contribute to a federated "Discord alternative", please give polyproto a look! It's a protocol designed to work well with the needs of "Discord-like" software and has the potential to be used by several existing projects, but really needs more contributors to help with implementation.

Projects looking to use polyproto can start with just the core identity federation while continuing to use their own APIs, allowing federation between that project's servers, and later implement the chat extension to federate with other projects.

Discord has something like this, but it’s completely uncontrollable it just picks persons what discord thinks is your fav friend.

And that way is not only annoying, but even kinda creepy.

It’s not only about caching up with base features but if it’s possible make it better than big one.

So my brother is setting our mom up on Discord for some reason. I guess because his indie game company heavily uses it. I get the sense she'll be using it to message me directly as well. However, I've never been into Discord and have actively avoided it most of my life. So I'm caving and finally setting up my own chat alternatives and am going to bridge them using Matterbridge. Just doing IRC (Ergo specifically), XMPP (via Prosody), Mumble maybe, and I guess Discord (non self-hosted obviously). I'll bridge these all together and maybe eventually I can get my family to adopt XMPP chat at some point and ditch Discord.
