The UX kind of reminds me of VIM where you have to enter and exit an editing mode before you're able to perform certain functions.

But where it gets gnarly is that there are no less than 5 kinds of modifier keys. Each of these modifiers are used in combination with copy, paste, and clear keys, depending on what mode you're in and what you're trying to copy-paste, so it gets super confusing.

Now, I don't really know if there's any better way to improve the UI, but yeah.

So I keep having to go back to the same tutorial for copy-paste routines on the #Digitone2 as I keep forgetting them. My one issue with the UX of this is that there are different editing modes and the copy-paste patterns change depending on the context which makes it harder to remember. In addition to different modes, there are also different things you can copy-paste, so it gets confusing:

1. Sounds (presets)
2. Sound properties
3. Trigger locks
4. Triggers
5. Patterns
etc.

Anyone using the Digitone, Digitakt, or other similar Elektron boxes know if there is a basic peak meter somewhere in the UI?

Or is that a kind of thing that makes no sense to use on a synth and instead only on a recording target or destination elsewhere? I'm trying to figure something out in the context of the compressor, in terms of a reference point to adjust each track.

It’s amazing what Elektron has been able to do with this tiny 128 x 64 screen and the hardware buttons. Really great UI and UX. Also the atypical UI elements like waveforms and 3D objects… how did they even program that? Were they all pixel-drawn for each step? So cool.

I’ve been interested in trying to make atonal music, maybe parametrically, and stoked that this Digitone synth has the ability to make dynamic rhythms but also a little disappointed that the hack is so complicated and requires sending MIDI and feeding it back into itself. This guy figured it out and it’s pretty cool.

Lmao man this Euclidean sequencer on the Digitone is cool. You don't even need creativity for the rhythm when you have writer's block. And such a convenient tool squeezed into the same box as the sound generators.

I was expecting something like the Make Noise Rene but this is kind of different. Not sure why it's called Euclidean, maybe it's because the rhythm always has to resolve to a predefined boundary.

I have to say one of the most complicated things in what I've learned in electronic music production has to be compression. I was just watching this tutorial on the Digitone 2 with a nice walkthrough of the compressor controls which is really great but also, still so complicated as far as how to know when you need to use it.

#Digitone2

About two months and two returns later, I finally seem to have a fully working #Digitone2.

First return: misaligned keys.
Second return: coil whine.
To be fair, #Elektron acknowledged both issues, and #Musicstore handled the fixes without any fuss — appreciated.

Still, this really shouldn’t happen with a factory-new, premium-priced device. QA should be tighter.
