Did a trail on the western slope of the Desolation Wilderness out of Wright's lake in El Dorado NF. Pyramid Pk in the DW used to be my go-to workout Pk and I have spent quite a few miles/days north and east of Pyramid - but have never explored west of it. Great place. Will go back, need to summit little pyramid Pk and find my way over to the main basin.

Another pic from our backpacking trip in Desolation Wilderness. About 2 miles up looking back at the starting point. Weather was perfect.

What a wonderful time backpacking Desolation Wilderness. Took us about 3 hrs to make it 3.5 miles up the mountain, but the kiddo (4y.o) was able to hike the whole way carrying her own backpack with water and toys. Sang the whole way back down again too!
Old doggo (13y.o) made it up & back wearing socks and booties, with no excess wear to her paws.
Saw myriad wildflowers in bloom and hung out with the marmots in our little slice of paradise next to the lake.

Marmot Scene

A fun fact about Yellow-Bellied Marmots: They’re so chonky, that if you listen carefully you can hear loose talus rocks go “clunk” as the marmots walk by. Fortunately, the marmots aren’t ambush predators, so this doesn’t hold them back very much.

The Chonkiest Marmot

Miles Chonkington, the world’s widest Yellow-Bellied Marmot, briefly started at right guard for the San Francisco 49ers. He was released after he hibernated through most of the regular season.

Thick and Fluffy

I have returned from a four day expedition to the Desolation Wilderness in the northern Sierra, where I discovered Miles Chonkington, a truly thick Yellow-Bellied Marmot. Miles enjoys long strolls on the talus, snacking on wildflowers, and long cozy naps.

Awesome cruise thru Desolation Wilderness today. Late summer is glorious in the mountains. #desolationwilderness #california #laketahoe #trailrunning #mountains #eldoradocounty
