Hey Mastodon! As I continue to dig through post-layoff life, I'm setting up more community discussions like the old days. Join me Wednesday Feb 28 for FREE at 4:30 PM PT on Zoom (registration required due to attendance limits) for an interactive Q&A session inspired by my book #DesignBeyondDevices. I'll open with how my practice has been going, then facilitate some community Q&A.

Are you working with multimodal design in your day to day practice? Are you trying to smooth the rough edges of transitions between devices in your company's experiences? Do you have questions about my book, Design Beyond Devices, and the frameworks included like the CROW customer discovery framework, activity modeling, notifications, and opti-pessimistic design? Let's get together as a community. I'd love to hear your success stories, rants about experiences that need help, and questions about the book.

🧵 Concerns about the latest troubling failures of Boeing’s MAX planes and their continued hubris - a textbook example of failure to apply opti-pessimistic thinking at scale.

A Boeing 737-MAX-9 had a piece of fuselage (a door plug) blow off in flight yesterday causing an emergency landing and minor injuries (a miracle). But was it really random? A recent Seattle Times article caught my eye with a related story.

Over pilots’ objection, Boeing seeks safety exemption for MAX 7

Boeing asked the FAA to exempt its 737 MAX 7 from certain safety regulations. Without the exemption, an engine anti-ice system defect will keep the jet from being certified.

Had a real Internet of Things #DesignBeyondDevices moment today when I got a (surprise) phone notification from my new 2023 Prius that let me know my husband had left it unlocked less than 24 hours after I bought it. Thanks, Toyota. HusbandProof(TM) 🤣 #uxDesign

I’ve seen this mentality inside companies too - where a business unit will be dead set on launching a new app even though the company has an established app installed on hundreds of thousands or millions of devices.

“Why not just integrate with the company app?”

“Oh, we want to launch a brand.”

The customer is NOWHERE in that scenario.

In my book #DesignBeyondDevices we talk about relationships - like company - customer. They often see you as ONE unit. #uxdesign

If you look at the photo in the original article, the people’s heads are positively wrapped in straps. NSFW jokes aside, between the weight of a headset and the tension of the straps to prevent slippage, the cumulative effect is to shorten the viable #VR session length for many people. I know with my migraines that’s just too much going on. This is why understanding context of use matters - how many encumbrances are your customers dealing with? #InclusiveDesign #DesignBeyondDevices #UXDesign
