Southwest Airlines announced that it will increase its checked‑baggage fees by $10, making a single checked bag cost $45 and a second bag $55, effective Thursday. The airline said the change is part of “an ongoing analysis of the business and against the evolving global backdrop.” A handful of travelers will still receive a free first checked bag, including certain Southwest loyalty‑tier members, holders of co‑branded credit cards, and active‑duty military personnel.

The move comes less than a year after Southwest ended its long‑standing “bags fly free” policy in May 2025, a shift that had set the carrier apart from rivals. Now Southwest joins other U.S. airlines—Delta, JetBlue and United—that have raised baggage fees since the Iran‑Iran‑Iraq conflict escalated in late February. Jet‑fuel prices have surged, with the U.S. Jet Fuel Index reporting an average of $4.81 per gallon in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York, up from $2.50 the day before the war began, as fighting near the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global oil supplies.

Oil prices remain well above pre‑war levels, hovering near $95 a barrel after a brief cease‑fire was announced, but the market stays volatile as Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to regional attacks. While U.S. carriers have largely relied on raising baggage fees, many foreign airlines are adding fuel surcharges to offset the higher jet‑fuel costs, a practice less common among U.S. airlines.
